Life wasn’t easy for Sugar Mercado prior to entering show business. As a young girl, her family would sleep on strips of wood and the roof of their home was often easily tossed aside by strong winds whenever a typhoon would hit.
Luckily, Sugar eventually made it to the big time. Her constant try-outs on beauty pageants back in the day gave her a shot at the longest running noontime show in the Philippines, “Eat Bulaga.”
Sugar Mercado was eventually picked to be a part of the variety program’s girl group called the “SexBomb Girls.” She also became a mainstay on the Kapuso sitcom “Fullhaus.” Sugar also performed at “Klownz” and “Zirkoh,” comedy bars owned by fellow “Eat Bulaga” star Allan K.
Soon enough, she had her first dramatic role on the primetime series “Zorro.” In 2010, she jumped ship to TV5 and appeared in “My Darling Aswang” alongside “Eat Bulaga” mainstays Vic Sotto and Jose Manalo.
Sugar Mercado eventually took a hiatus from showbiz to focus on being a hands-on mother to her two adorable daughters, Olivia and Gabrielle.
Unfortunately, her marriage failed after she alleged that her husband was physically abusing her.
In a 2016 interview with DZMM, Sugar Mercado cried for justice and publicly accused her ex-husband Kristofer Jay Go of domestic abuse. She was also fighting for the custody of their children.
She shared:
“Hindi niya ko pinahihinga. Kapag nagagalit siya sakin sinasabi niya mas demonyo pa ko sa magulang ko. Yung pinaka malala yung sinasaktan niya ko habang buntis ako, hindi niya ko pinahihinga, tapos inaawat siya nung mga kasambahay, yung mga yaya nung mga anak ko ayaw niya kong bitawan so yung tiyan ko ginigilid ko para di niya ko madaganan, masuntok.”
She made the decision to re-enter the showbiz industry, currently working as one of hosts of Willie Revillame‘s “Wowowin.”
Fortunately, it seems like things turned out fine for Sugar Mercado as evident in most of her Instagram posts that show how happy she is bonding with her beloved children.
