An Inmate Died After The Concrete Ceiling Collapsed In Butuan Jail



An inmate died, 54 other inmates were rescued and 13 are wounded after the concrete ceiling of the Butuan City Jail collapsed early Friday morning.



The ceiling of their cell was caused by heavy winds and rains caused by typhoons.The unfortunate incident was believed to be brought about by the continuous downpour of typhoons “Urduja” and “Vinta” that hit the region last week and Thursday.

Jail authorities identified the lone fatality as Pajad Pandein, 34, a resident of Purok 11, Ong Yui District in this city, and facing charges of robbery. While another inmate, Roden Bacor, was in the hospital after complaining of back and knee pain.



Bacor said that his nape was hit with a cement that eventually served as a roof of their cell. It also fell from the triple deck meaning that his knee was broken.

The jail warden, Senior Insp. Marlon Castelo, a few days as the rainy season of the cellar has always been readily watched as the building is almost 20 years old.



Initial investigation conducted by police authorities here said the collapse of the ceiling of the Butuan City Jail happened at 3 a.m.

Rescue teams of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and Philippine Red Cross immediately arrived at the scene and rescued the 54 inmates, some of whom suffered only minor bruises.



The Butuan City Medical Center was rushed to the injured while others were subjected to psycho-social debriefing.

As of press time, police investigating team is still determining the cause of the incident.



It was gathered that the building of the Butuan City Jail is set for rehabilitation in the first quarter of next year.

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology responded to the hospitalization of the hospital while Pandiin's family was financially assisted.



In the meantime, the City Jail's office will be able to sleep on the side of the affected prisoners to ensure their safety as the typhoon "Vinta" continues to rain.

Butuan City's Butuan Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council clarified that they have yet to say that the roof collapsed in jail.
